Cervicogenic headache: Find Relief From This
Common problem!
Common problem!
Headache and neck pain is one of the most common problems that I treat in my Los Angeles based clinic. Cervicogenic is just one type of headache and it by definition is caused by chronic stiffness and pain of the joints, fascia and nerves in the neck. These headaches are associated with stiffness in the neck with limited neck motion that creates radiating pain anywhere from the base of the skull pain that travels to create pain over the eye.
Causes of your headaches
Usually chronic headaches are associated with poor posture or prolonged and sustained positions that require the head to be forward relative to the trunk. This requires the neck muscles on the constantly be contracting and eventually can trigger headache symptoms. Computer workers experiencing headache is probably the most common problem seen in my clinical practice.
Symptoms
- Pain in the back of the neck that radiates to the eye, temple and ear region.
- Limited neck motion on side of headache
- Shoulder pain on same side
- Both sides can be affected
- If you have a headache and neck pain then it’s most commonly cervicogenic.
- May be associated with other headache types such as migraine headaches.
Headache Relief
Cervicogenic is just one type of headache, but it’s the most common and usually the easiest to fix. Treatment needs to consist of the following.
- Manual fascial release of the muscles, fascia, joints and nerves of the neck, shoulders and upper back.
- Chiropractic Adjustment or joint mobilizations can be helpful
- Postural retraining and ergonomic evaluation of working station if related to computer work
- Mobility exercises target to both the upper neck and mid thoracic spine
- Avoid aggressive stretching of the neck. This creates excessive tension on the joints and nerves that radiated and producing your headache.
